Compost is a natural fertilizer made from organic waste. It helps plants grow better by improving the soil. Here’s a simple way to make your own compost at home:
1. Choose a Compost Bin
You can buy a compost bin or make one using a plastic container or wooden box. It should have holes for air to enter.
2. Add Green Materials
Green materials are rich in nitrogen. You can add:
Fruit and vegetable peels
Coffee grounds
Grass clippings
Fresh plant trimmings
3. Add Brown Materials
Brown materials add carbon. You can use:
Dry leaves
Small branches
Shredded paper or cardboard
Sawdust
4. Mix the Materials
Mix green and brown materials in layers. Try to keep a balance: about one part green to two parts brown.
5. Keep It Moist
Your compost should be as wet as a wrung-out sponge. If it’s too dry, add water. If it’s too wet, add more brown materials.
6. Turn It Regularly
Use a shovel or stick to mix the compost every 1-2 weeks. This gives it air and helps it break down faster.
7. Wait and Use
In 2 to 3 months, your compost will look dark and smell earthy. Then, you can use it to feed your garden plants!
